Company Background: SRI University SRI International (SRI) is an American nonprofit research institute headquartered in Menlo Park, California. The trustees of Stanford University established SRI in 1946 as a center of innovation to support economic development in the region. SRI performs client-sponsored research and development for government agencies, commercial businesses, and private foundations. It also licenses its technologies, forms strategic partnerships, sells products, and creates spin-off companies. SRI’s annual revenue in 2014 was approximately $540 million. SRI’s headquarters are located near the Stanford University campus.

We have many very curious intellectual stimulated scientists, PhDs, researchers in SRI, and they are coming out with great ideas all the time.  In term, our government, companies also provide ideas, but tends to be very focusing on certain subjects. Our success rate is 30-40% for our research projects going into the real world, very high. Normally by the same measurement, it is only 1-4% for the rest of the world.

We recruit our researchers through best schools like Stanford, we have 20 lab locations in the US, and each one is located near the very prestigious universities. Our best way of recruiting is by people hearing about us.


We don’t have donors, we do contracted work. We compete with big companies like Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, and maybe other universities. We have to perform according to our SOW (statement of work). We have to hit the schedule, budget and SOW. Our project durations vary from 3 months to 10 years.  For example, the drug we are trying to get through the clinical stage takes many years of hard work.

We are doing a lot of work with 30 different countries. Most of the research groups are in US and we have a number of groups in China.  China has to protect its own IPs just like us these days because China has developed a lot of new technologies. In many cases, trying to solve big problems around the world like cancers and so forth, takes combined efforts. Ideally we have a number of Chinese American in SRI would love us to do more business and research in China. Same as India.

SRI International & Yamaha – Autonomous Racing Motobot Testing

Motobot started life in 2014 as a ‘moonshot’ project for Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha. Yamaha’s initial concept was a “humanoid robot that can ride a motorcycle autonomously” and the company teamed up with SRI International to achieve its vision.

Motobot 2.0 is a fully autonomous motorcycle-riding robot that was specially designed to drive around a racetrack at high speed on a Yamaha YZF-R1M, the same kind of motorbike that racing legend Valentino Rossi rides. In September 2017, the team that developed Motobot 2.0 achieved one of its goals when the robot successfully hit speeds exceeding 200km/h (124 mph) on the race track – 50 km/h faster than its predecessor Motobot 1.0. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your point of view, this still fell short of the lap time of Valentino Rossi – which they were trying to beat – by about 30 seconds.
